Brightness is the total return of white light from both the interior and exterior of the diamond. A well-cut diamond maximizes brightness by ensuring that most light entering the stone finds its way back to the observer's eye.
Fire is the dispersion of that white light into spectral colors — the rainbow flashes visible when the diamond catches a light source at an angle. Fire is created by the diamond's facets acting as prisms, splitting white light into its component wavelengths.

This is the C where the most money is most frequently misspent.
The Eye-Clean Principle

For most buyers: VS2 or SI1, confirmed eye-clean. This delivers maximum value by not paying for grading laboratory-level perfection that is not visible in everyday wear.
For buyers who specifically want documented flawlessness — for investment purposes, for sentimental reasons, or for personal preference — VVS or higher is appropriate. The premium is real but so is the documentation of quality.
Clarity and Diamond Shape
Clarity requirements vary by shape. Round brilliant cuts mask inclusions better than step-cut shapes. An SI1 inclusion that is invisible in a round brilliant might be visible in an emerald cut because the step facets create a cleaner, more transparent appearance that makes inclusions easier to see.
For emerald and Asscher cuts, target VS2 or better. For round, oval, cushion, and most brilliant cuts, VS2 to SI1 eye-clean is appropriate.

The 4Cs for Lab Grown Diamonds — Same Grading, Different Price
Lab grown diamonds are graded on exactly the same 4C framework as natural diamonds by GIA and IGI. The same cut grades, the same D-to-Z color scale, the same FL-to-I3 clarity scale, the same carat weight measurement. There is no separate lab grown grading system.
The only difference: price. Lab grown diamonds cost often substantially less than natural diamonds of equivalent 4C grades.
